First Dance Workshop @Studio 10

So everyone Monday night from 9-11pm, Studio 10 has guest choreographers from various backgrounds some to teach some choreo. Last night my friends and I decided to try it out. For most of us, it was our first time taking something outside of the one we took at De Anza. It was a bit intimidating at first since it seemed everyone had been dancing for quite awhile, but after a bit that feeling went away. Everyone was surprisingly friendly and supportive. I swear like 5 strangers came up to me and introduced themselves to me. I’m not used to that. Usually I’m the one that has to introduce myself to people. The workshop was headed by Sammy Ramirez, a dancer known for his popping style. He appeared on So you think you can dance? a few years back. I was curious and just youtube’d him. Here’s his audition tape:

He’s a super friendly and funny teacher. I think I ended up laughing away most of my nerves. We spent the first hour wish a crash course in the popping and tutting. Then near the end he began teaching his choreo which was SO HARD but it looked pretty cool. There was so much footwork, turns, and subtle hand movements. I managed to get about half of it down to memory and the rest I just copied what I saw to the best of my ability. The nice thing was most of the class was like “WTH OMG” too and they were having trouble keeping up so I don’t feel so bad.  After hanging around a bit after class so that i could give my friend Vicky pictures from our photo shoot, we somehow ended up deciding to eat afterwards at In-N-Out and Sammy came along too! It was super chill. He even paid for my fries [I failed since I forgot my wallet in my car at the studio and my friend drove us to get food]. He seemed really embarrassed about his audition on So you think you can dance and said that he sucked a lot then. Uhhhh I just saw it and I thought it was pretty damn good. I got home at 1 am and now I’m and work super tired. Pretty cool experience though!
